Question 01 - I am completely confused by SEO - Where do I start ?

Whether you actually have a website or are still at the stage of developing one for your business, hobby or other interest, the answer is the same: do some keyword research (see also Q4). If you do not yet have a website then keyword research will tell you what content to put on the pages that you would like to be found by search engines; and if you already have a website then keyword research will indicate how to optimise your existing pages and also reveal where you can add more pages to address gaps In the market.

Question 03 - What's the Difference Between On-Page and Off-Page SEO ?

On Page refers to changes that you can make to your pages to make them more attractive to search engines (see also Q9). Off page SEO concerns the things that you can do to promote your website that are not On Page – mainly backlinks and anchor text plus registering for services such as Google My Business.

Question 05 - What is Local and General SEO ?

Basically the difference between the target audiences for your business. If you want to sell Fair trade or ethical products and reach prospective customers in Edinburgh and Newcastle then you are going to need General, or Organic Long-Term SEO, whereas if you have a fitness training business in Fulham then you need to develop a Good Local SEO Strategy.

A Head Keyword is a single word such as “shoes”. While this in fact may have hundreds of thousands of hits per month, it is useless for the purposes of optimising a webpage. Note that this is going to be something that fluctuates as various blogs and podcasts fall in and out of favour. Question 10 - People Recommend Yoast - What's Your Opinion Of It?

Unfortunately not very high. This is due solely to the fact that they seem to have a product which does some good things but then try jumping onto the SEO bandwagon in order to increase sales. In our opinion, Yoast misses the major points of SEO in many respects – with no mention of keyword research, and no competitor analysis for example – however, it does do some things well and due to this is actually a welcome addition to most people’s website setup...

The tool that we would recommend for this is Statcounter. Like Google Analytics, not only is this free for the basic service (which is more than adequate for the majority of users,) it is also one where the creators are approachable and happy to help with user queries. We would recommend Buzz Sumo. (You can sign up for their free 7 day trial) and research your field. Remember to get ideas for both “topical” and “evergreen” blog posts.
